The Dog Days of Summer

A heartwarming new program that brings together high school students with autism with dogs for a six-week canine training program.

The Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk, Maine certainly has students (and dogs!) Jumping for Joy these days. Funded by a grant from the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation, the Animal Welfare Society started a pilot program to specifically serve teens and young adults with autism. This six-week humane education course pairs students with autism spectrum disorder and therapy dogs together in an educational and therapeutic setting. Modeled after a successful program at the Marin Humane Society in California, this is the first time AWS has implemented programming to specifically serve those diagnosed with ASD—but, you can be assured, it will not be the last!

page_jumpingforjoy0217.jpgIn collaboration with Kennebunk High School, students arrive with teachers and pair up with an Animal Welfare Society Human Educator, volunteers and certified therapy dogs. The students guide their dogs through an agility course, observing and getting to know the dog’s habits while improving upon their own social skills, verbal communication and spatial awareness. During this weekly bonding experience, students are getting to know the habits of the dogs they are paired with: do they like to run? Do they require commands, or do they simply need a treat to get them motivated? These are just a few skills that the students will learn and develop to create a comfortable environment for the dog. And, by no coincidence, they’re developing empathy, commitment, and self-confidence. After all, the only obstacles we saw were the ones outside on the agility course! .
